Tie-Dye T-Shirts: A Blast from the Past!

Supplies Checklist

  • Several plain white t-shirts/shorts/tank tops, or whichever garment you prefer, so long as it’s white!
  • Fabric Dye (available for sale at any grocery store, hardware store, or your local department store. We suggest RIT!)
  • Rubber Bands
  • Rubber Gloves (we suggest purchasing rubber gloves that go above the elbow if possible, Tie-Dyeing is messy!)
  • Marbles
  • Water
  • Plastic Drop/Painting Sheet (for Indoor usage. If you are Tie-Dyeing outdoors, no need for this item!)

Instructions: There are several unique Tie-Dye varieties to choose from, but for simplicity’s sake, we chose the most recognizable Tie-Dye design for you to work from.

Tie-Dye: Sunburst Design

Step 1: Prepare your packages of dye. We suggest preparing several different colours in several different buckets to avoid mixing colours, thus ruining your beautiful dyes! Make sure to follow the instructions as carefully as possible, and always keep an eye on your kiddie when you’re preparing your dyes!

Step 2: Grab your t-shirts/garments, marbles and rubber bands and have a seat! (This process takes a little while). Be absolutely sure to watch your kiddies around the marbles (or any small objects for that matter).

First, choose an area on your t-shirt to begin working on (we recommend working from the middle outwards). For every marble placed inside/on your t-shirt, wrap one elastic tightly around it (see photo below for a visual representation). Once you have utilized all of the free space on your garment you are officially ready to Tie-Dye! We recommend strongly that you take over the dyeing process, simply because textile dyes can be as harmful to your skin as most household bleaches are, so be safe!

Step 3: Place your garment(s) in the dye colour of your choice and let it sit for a minimum of 15-20 minutes. Remember that the longer you leave your garment in the dye for, the deeper and richer the colours will turn out.

Step 4: Remove your garments (using rubber gloves of course!) and ring them dry until you can safely transport them around without dripping excess dye. A lot of instructional websites will suggest to rinsing your garments immediately after dyeing, however, we suggest allowing the dye to dry slightly so the colour preserves itself more. Simply place your garments anywhere safe and let them sit for approximately 10 minutes before rinsing.

Step 5: Rinse each garment under cold water until the water runs clear (rinsing Tie-Dye is much like rinsing freshly dyed hair. If the water doesn’t run perfectly clear, that indicates that there is still residue left behind, therefore you will run the risk of getting dye all over your belongings, so be safe and let the water run clear!). From there, remove all elastics and marbles from the garment (and preferably dispose of the elastics. If you’d like to save the marbles, simply give them a quick rinse!). Once you have removed the elastics, you will see your amazing Tie-Dye Sunburst print!

Garment Care Instructions: We strongly recommend washing your newly Tie-Dyed garments separately from the rest of your usual clothing for the first two washes.

Bendy Snakes: Fun for Every Age!

Supplies Checklist:

  • Strips of Felt in a variety of colours, ideally 1 ¼’’ wide and varied lengths
  • Pipecleaners
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Googlie Eyes
  • Glitter
  • Any other personalized items you can think of!

Step 1: If you haven’t cut out your strips of felt, cut approximately 10-12 strips in a variety of lengths.

Step 2: Lay out each strip on a flat surface and place two pipecleaners in the middle of each strip of felt.

Step 3: Place a sufficient amount of glue on the inside of the first piece of felt and around each pipe cleaner. Then, place the second piece of felt on top, secure it in place and allow all pieces to dry together.

Step 4: Here’s the fun part! Get your kiddies to personalize each Bendy Snake by adding googlie eyes, glitter and any other fun personalization’s they can think of!

African Drum: If your kiddie loves music, they’ll love this project!

Supplies Checklist

  • Drinking Cups (Styrofoam, Paper or Plastic will all do the trick!)
  • Glue
  • Masking Tape
  • Shoe Polish (You can find Shoe Polish at any Dollar Store, Hardware Store, Department Store or even a Shoe Store!)
  • Rags
  • Permanent Markers

Step 1: Glue two cups together, bottom to bottom. Make sure you allow drying time or else your cups will pull apart once you’re decorating them!

Step 2: Tear off several lengths of masking tape and cover the tops of each cup thoroughly. Layering the tape will help achieve this step.

Step 3: Using more lengths of masking tape, cover the rest of each cup, and again, using the layering technique to ensure full coverage.

Step 4: Lightly brush your shoe polish around all areas that are covered with masking tape. Then, use your rags to wipe the excess shoe polish off of your drums.

Step 5: Using your permanent markers, draw different unique designs all over the drums to personalize them!

Step 6: Watch your kiddies flourish musically with their new drums!

Alien Mask: Play Dressup with your Kiddie!

Supplies Checklist

  • Thin sheets of foam in assorted neon colours. We suggest neon green, neon orange or neon pink.
  • Scissors
  • Non-Toxic Craft Glue
  • Decorations such as googlie eyes, sparkles and so on
  • Elastic String, or alternatively you may use a rubber band
  • Hole Puncher

Step 1: Click here to view the mask pattern and print it. Alternatively you may create your very own pattern by using your imagination!

Step 2: Once you have printed the pattern (or created your own), cut out the pattern and place it on one foam sheet at a time. Cut around the pattern. We recommend either taping down the pattern or even using a sewing needle to hold the pattern in place.

Step 3: Place the cut out mask on your kiddies face and mark where your kiddies eyes will go in respect to the mask.

Step 4: Have your little one(s) decorate their masks with googlie eyes, sparkles, or anything that looks extra terrestrial!

Step 5: Punch a small hole on the each side of the mask.

Step 6: Position mask on your kiddies face to estimate length of elastic needed, adding an extra 4 inches to this length. Tie elastic on your kiddies mask and have them put it on!
